Outdoor Living
A deck that extends your living space and holds up through Michigan seasons — framed right, built to code, designed around how you actually use it.
Deck Construction
"A well-built deck pays you back every summer for decades."
Up here, a deck goes through a lot. Hard winters, wet springs, summer sun and foot traffic. The difference between a deck that holds up and one that warps, sags, or rots comes down to a few non-negotiable things: footings below frost depth, a properly connected ledger board, the right decking material for the exposure, and framing that's sized for the load.
Gerhard & Sons builds decks that are designed around the way you plan to use your yard — not just a generic rectangle bolted to the house. Whether it's a simple back deck or a multi-level platform with stairs and built-in seating, we build it to last and build it to code.
What's Included
Concrete piers poured below Michigan's frost line — the most important part of a deck most homeowners never see. Properly sized for the load, properly placed so nothing heaves or shifts.
Beams, posts, and joists sized for the span and load. Ledger boards properly flashed and fastened to the house framing — not just screwed to the rim joist. This is where deck failures happen when it's done wrong.
Pressure-treated, composite (Trex and similar), or cedar decking — installed with proper gapping for drainage and expansion. Railing systems to code height and strength, plus stair layout and stringers that are comfortable to walk.
Partial repairs on decks that are structurally sound but need work — replacing rotted boards, fixing ledger connections, reframing a section. Or full tear-down and rebuild when it's time to start over.
